The research study Neurocognitive functioning in youth with pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcus shows that neurocognitive functioning can be impaired with children who have PANDAS.
This study, done by Drs. Murphy, Storch, Lewin and Mutch in 2011, showed that neurocognitive impairments (including visuospatial recall memory) can be significantly impaired in PANDAS youths. There was also a correlation with the lowering of certain abilities and the increase in certain symptoms, like OCD, with a raise in strep titers. These children, however, did score average to above average on academic testing.
