For kids, infection can spur deeper condition

Maria Howard has a son who was diagnosed in 2010 with Sydenham’s Chorea, a condition related to PANDAS with similar symptoms and treatments. He was treated with daily antibiotics to prevent flare ups. During the summer before second grade, seven-year-old Noah Basch turned into a troubled kid, seemingly overnight. He became an anxious, hyperactive, obsessive child with extreme nighttime fears. He was then diagnosed with PANDAS. In addition to OCD, Noah experienced unreasonable mood swings, attention problems and coordination issues.
