‘PANS’ – The little-known syndrome going undiagnosed in Australian children

After a severe case of strep throat that turned into scarlet fever, 6-year-old Carys Fletcher had a seizure in class, blacked out and woke up in her own vomit. She developed a fear of vomiting and experienced severe fits of rage that would last for up to an hour and result in furniture being thrown all over the house. Eventually, an ear, nose and throat specialist asked about OCD symptoms and mentioned the possibility of PANS. From there, Carys saw PANS specialist Dr. Russell Dale, who confirmed her diagnosis. Though treatment has left her in remission for years at a time, Carys still struggles with relapses and periods of illness.
