Pandas: A little-known disorder with a large impact

Karen Cafferky, a mom from Ireland, noticed that her son Ethan was developing tics and strange body movements. She took him to the doctor but was brushed off and told that the symptoms would resolve over time—but they didn’t. He experienced symptom flare-ups and was eventually diagnosed with PANDAS, but his doctors were unable to provide treatment. That’s when Karen asked specialists from the U.S. to visit Ireland and took on the task of setting up a PANDAS awareness conference. Bringing PANDAS experts from the U.S. will help educate both doctors and parents in Ireland, raise awareness and aid progress in diagnosing and treating this disease.
