PANDAS: A Puzzling Illness in Children

PANDAS continues to be an elusive diagnosis for many providers, leaving families in the middle with no effective treatment for their child’s symptoms. One mother shares her experience of trying to get her son, Andrew, a diagnosis after a sudden onset of strange behaviors, such as uncontrollable blinking, severe headache and OCD. After visits to multiple pediatricians with no answers, this mother reached out to an online support group and learned about PANDAS. PANDAS seemed to match what Andrew was going through, and she connected his illness to a possible strep infection right before he developed symptoms. After identifying this, she was able to get Andrew a personalized treatment plan and on the road to recovery.
